This paper brings to together key learning from the Police Foundation’s Police Effectiveness in a Changing World project, which examined the challenges facing the police service in a changing world and the implications for policing practice in the second decade of the 21st century.
The paper provides a summary of the definition of police effectiveness developed for this project and introduces the concept of ‘informed proactivity’ as the mode of working shown to be best suited to delivering results. Additionally it provides a brief synopsis of the project conducted in two towns – Slough and Luton, and outlines the key dimensions of change that were found to be relevant to achieving informed proactivity (and effectiveness).
